Ornithopter Designer · Bird-inspired flight simulation
Ornithopter Designer received the Gold Award (금상) in the 2024 RecurDyn Simulation Competition. The KAIST entry by Hyeon-Ho Yang and Hyeong-Seok Ko presented an integrated simulation program for a bird-inspired flapping-wing aircraft.
Aircraft Model
KRoFalcon-S provided the reference configuration for the forward-flight study, with a fuselage, non-folding main wings and tail control surfaces. The simulation accounts for wing flexibility.
KRoFalcon-S (left) and its simulation model (right) are shown at different scales.
Coupled Simulation
Fluid–structure interaction couples aerodynamic loads with structural motion: wing motion and deformation change the loads, which in turn deform and move the wing.
ORNISP (ORNithopter Integrated Simulation Program) combines aerodynamic analysis with RecurDyn to compute the coupled motion of the aircraft and its flexible wings.
The workflow covered model generation through post-processing, and the results were compared with KRoFalcon-S flight data. The ORNISP research page describes the current program.
